Why we have everything to learn from Outdoor Centres in Scotland ?
Scotland is a favourable field for discovery and Outdoor adventures as we can imagine. Wild landscapes create an experience, hard to find nowadays, thanks to this unique nature.
By these aspects, the region has set up for several decades, outdoor centres aiming to promote an inclusive approach, leaving to any individual the possibility to integrate a centre. The educative vision of these structures is detached from any competition with an adaptation to each pupil’s capacities and not the contrary. Furthermore, the outdoor universe suggested matches perfectly with the centres’ culture, which means kindness, adaptation to others, listening. Likewise, we are aware of all the positive aspects that Nature generates on our whole body (see previous article), then we can only agree with these centres’ initiative.
Nevertheless, the Scottish councils decided to shut down most of the centres due to a lack of money. Thus, when we list the Scottish centres today, we count no more than 7 structures, taking for account that 2 of them are about to close, 70 centres were listed at the beginning of the 80s for those belonging to local authorities.
Against those closures, some groups supporting outdoor centres have launched petitions in order to preserve the institutes left or to include this model into current schools.
